Ready, set, row: University of 91原创 rowers enter world stage

The Canadian team consists of eleven University of 91原创 graduates and students

The World University Rowing Championship will feature 15 University of 91原创 student-athletes from July 4 to 6 in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

For many student-athletes, it will be the first time they competed on the world stage. For Vikings stand-out and Canadian University rowing gold medallist Giancarlo DiPompeo, it will be the first time he will row solo on the world stage.

"I have raced internationally a few times now and took home a bronze medal last year at the under-23 World Rowing Championships, so I am looking to use that experience to push to the next level," DiPompeo said.

DiPompeo and the men are under the tutelage of head coach Aalbert Van Schothorst, and training takes place on Elk Lake. The Canadian team consists of 11 UVic graduates and students.

Jane Gumley, three-time Canadian University Rowing Coach of the Year, will lead the women's team. She is making her international coaching debut.

Gumley will co-lead the women's eight and pair, which includes Viking rowers Danica Ariano, Mikaela Holthuis, and Gabrielle Keiser, with training taking place at Elk Lake.

"I'm excited to work with different athletes from programs across the country. To see them come together, build camaraderie, and have this experience is something they won't forget," Gumley said.

University of 91原创 student athletes attending the World University Rowing Championship will be self-funded, and they are asking for donations.
